What is IP67 waterproof rating? When pondering to oneself, what are IP codes, be careful not to be confused with IP address or Intellectual Property. If you were to do a navigation search in your quest to find the best waterproof/weather proof speakers then now you are on the trail of discovering the true meaning of IP6 and IP7 ratings.

Imagine, when you are out on the trail, a downpour can turn your hike into a muddy mess. You will want to be sure that you are carrying a devise that is rated to handle the weather. The digits (characteristic numerals) indicate conformity with such conditions. Most handheld GPS units are rated to the IPX7 waterproofing standard; a pretty good standard that keeps the unit sound in the face of whatever a typical hike bike, run or other outing can throw at it. Some handhelds are rated to the IPX6 standard; which is a lower standard that doesn't offer the immersion capability that the IPX7 does...... What is immersion capability? This equals Heavy splashing and rain - This test sends water at all angles through a 12.5mm nozzle at a rate of 100 liters/min at a pressure of 100kN/m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. The testing proves that devices are protected against water immersion - Immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. For example, Most newer Garmin® GPS units are waterproof in accordance with IEC 60529 IPX7. IEC 60529 is a European system of test specification standards for classifying the degrees of protection provided by the enclosures of electrical equipment. An IPX7 designation means the GPS case can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. An IPX8 designation is for continuous underwater use.

Ingress Protection Test Equipment is used to determine the degree of protection provided by a product enclosure. The level of protection provided by an enclosure is represented by an "IP" code (i.e. IP43). The first digit indicates protection against ingress of solid foreign objects.

The IP Code (or Ingress Protection Rating, sometimes also seen as International Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits or one digit and one letter and an optional letter. IP Code classifies and rates the degrees of protection against the infiltration of solid objects including dust, accidental contact, and water in mechanical casings and with electrical enclosures. The wide variety of scenarios and testing ranges leaves space for varying interpretations.
